This was our "big" room on the Coastal Starlight.

My lovely wife and I just returned from a long trip which included trying the AmTrak Coastal Starlight. Our room was nice but cramped and a little pricey. Meals were included which was good because I would have choked at paying the menu prices (and I am used to Alaska prices). The lunch choices were basically just burgers but breakfast and dinner were not bad.
We were stopped for 4+ hours due to a high speed chase following a homicide then policeman being killed. They could not do the scene investigation until after sunrise. They tried to make up the lost time but the tracks are just not in good enough shape for even 5-10 more mph. It took about 3 days to get my land legs back.
Most of the passengers we spoke with were just afraid to fly (which seems to be a growing mental illness).
I am glad that we took this leg of the trip but I enjoyed the short rides on steam locomotives more.

My lovely wife has an interest in taking an overnight train trip.  We are considering Amtrak's Coast Starlight https://boingboing.net/2014/06/15/36-hours-to-seattle-taking-th.html  Does anyone have any experience with this route or have another route that you recommend?

Nice find. Looks like a Canadian Pacific 2-6-0 that was lost.
