Paper and Dice Gamers

This is a place for those who remember the glory days of role play before the new fangled electronic games got so popular. Dice and a pencil and paper and your imagination was all that was needed.

This is so cool, I like the 2nd edition myself. Played it as a kid with my older brothers.

  • Captain Lachlan Bellraven

Anyone remember the old animated movie Wizards? I found my RPG books for the game based on it !  Elves kicking mutant butt !!!!!

  • Sgt. Ian MacBrooke

Had fun introducing the nephews to the magic that poured from Bakshi's overly talented brain.

Hi Everyone, I"m from New Zealand. I play a steampunk Feng Shui game. As I'm new to gaming, I"m not sure how to describe the game, but its a lot of fun. I play with local steampunks, every two weeks, & we are our character, on a mission...we just dont know how we all fit into the scheme of things...but our game master does. He has developed our characters somewhat, now I have a multi faceted persona...quite exciting really

Had a lot fun playing the games Boot Hill and Star Trek the Role Playing game.

Hi all, my experience with RPGs have been mostly with the archtypical high fantasy games like D&D 4th ed Dragonlance and Pathfinder. I’ve also played some GURPS with time travel mechanics, and I’ve looked into using the GURPS steampunk ruleset but I didn’t have the resources. I’m actually in search of groups running Steampunk or games with ebberon style Magitek elements in my local state of Texas. Also one module that seems interesting is Ravenloft, does anybody have any experience with it?

My steampunk book series began as tabletop rpg 25 years ago, and still goes on. Currently doing one in Russia 1911, dieselpunk/superhero. Using Fate Accelerated, very story driven. Might tack on another era in the near future...

  • William J. Jackson

Krakyn c.o.G. I'd like to do one on Discord using my Legacy Universe as backdrop. Not sure which era or locale yet, maybe steampunk. Use Fate Accelerated. You game? Anybody else?

  • William J. Jackson

Fate: the game system. Free here-

Legacy Universe: the world I write my stories. More later.

Discord: a server where folks meet to play rpg's.

    Thank you.

  • William J. Jackson

    Anybody up for it?

  • William J. Jackson

Capital! I shall begin planning a tale of superhumans hiding away somewhere in the world, circa the mid 1890's. Garner an idea of a person on the run from the Railroad City, Missouri (where the talents in humans formed) and I'll fill in the rest. Give the Fate Accelerated a download and read over (you can opt to download it for $0.00).

Any questions, email me at andorian9@gmail.com. I'll set up a roll20.net spot for the game once I give it some background and a name, and a Discord link, once I find out how lol.

A paranormal (racist term is Pinhead or Pin) is Legacy Universe speak for a superhuman. After 1884, the Rail is taken over by the military. Pins are killed, shipped off to parts unknown, or run away. You're the latter. I'm leaning towards the Aviary, a group of paranormals who take bird names and hunt for alien artifacts around the globe. Like Indiana Jones meets Justice Society meets War of the Worlds.

  • William J. Jackson

Not sure how we play on here, but sounds cool if I xan make it work.

  • Captain

I am not very into online gaming but what about setting up an RPG on a separate page just like this?  Individual and subgroups of characters could start threads in the Discussion Forum with "secret" communications being PMed to the GM.

  • William J. Jackson

    Captain:

    1. Sounds good.

    2. Are you in?

  • Captain

I'll *try* understanding that I am old school and like face-to-face gaming.  What exactly do you have in mind?

  • Professor Wilbur Sterling

William J. Jackson where would one download the Fate Accelerated ruleset?

  • William J. Jackson

Forum is old school, but as I've never done it, it sounds cool. Plus it negates aligning times, and lets me take more time in writing out events and y'all to react.

As for dice rolling, Fate has a free downloadable app. I'll try to set up the page and see if the app can be applied there. If not, we'll have to operate on trusting one another as we roll from our homes and report results.

Plot: based on my books, but in short, in 1877, an alien element exploded in Railroad City, MO. Many people acquired superhuman powers. There was a team of heroes, the Guild of Honor. Steam tech became more advanced.

1893...the Golden Age is long over. America is empire. The military subjugated the Rail. Superhumans are cannon fodder, on the run. One person, the owner of the periodical Second World, helped send young paranormals to safety around the world.

Now, he recruits those same refugees into an Aviary. Taking the name of birds, each character is now a Second World employee, travelling the globe, doing stories. But really, they search for evidence of past alien affairs on Earth.

Indiana Jones, Victorian style, with minor superpowers.

  • William J. Jackson

Hate to be a bummer but a gryffon is not a bird.

  • William J. Jackson

    Yes, the books I write.

  • William J. Jackson

Griffin is not in a bird book. NPC who formed Aviary is a bird lover. Griffin is mythological, not an actual bird.

  • William J. Jackson

If he looks like one, he won't have work. In this world, looking not quite human is called a Freek, and they are persecuted worse and without work. Would make it too hard to travel as well. He'd need to look human at least most of the time. Otherwise fine. He and Mason can argue over whether he is a griffon vulture or a griffin (Mason is very uptight and ornithological) lol. Will make for good roleplaying side story.

  • William J. Jackson

That would work, remember to define how it works. Also, sent you an invite to The Aviary group.

  • Captain

So, William J. Jackson what would you like players to do first?  I do have a hard copy of rules, thank you.

  • William J. Jackson

First you can read the rules, make your character and post it as a Discussion in the Aviary. I have added a page there giving some background, and will add more soon. As you add your characters, we can discuss what works, what doesn't, and how y'all got together.

  • Captain

Now why would you assume that I have not read the rules yet???  I'll get to reading.
