Poison; a bonding expirience

Arabella knocked on the polished wood of the bar. "Southern Comfort and something with which to kill this guy behind me." She smiled and then drew her gun when his hand slid onto her neck. "Nevermind, this'll do just fine." Once again, Arabella Porter's revolver was pressed into the chest of Thomas Dunning. "Give me the warrant papers or I'll shoot."

"I don't have them. I wouldn't have those privileges in foreign skies and soils." He held his hands half way up in surrender, looking… Continue

In which the cursed scarf is always blamed

It had been happening all week. It started when the Widow's morning loot victim turned out to be a crew of monks. Ara sighed and scanned the group of firmly standing men in their brown robes, unafraid of death. Nothing to offer. She turned to the crew.

"I told you you should have burned that fucking scarf." Jon pointed out. Everyone laughed at him until the next ship when Ara had just happened to be helping Chanter with a crate of pomegranates and he slipped on a tea towel on the… Continue

A serious matter concerning common sense and manners or the lack thereof...

I just caught Mr. Willeford's posting in the PA Steampunk group page on FB and thought it would be in the lines of a quick reminder of just how quickly the politically correct kneejerk can become a serious problem in and of itself.

Day 35: Jeff Mach’s Giant Robot- The last update

Or,

“Why I will NOT be attending the Steampunk World’s Fair or any other Jeff Mach events.

If you went to work and found this sign on the door, would you just walk in and accept…

In which Ara receives a cursed scarf

"What is the meanin of this!!!!??" Shouted a well suited man who stumbled in front of a well clothed (yet terrified) crowd of air cruise guests. David looked back at captain Charlotte who gave him a nod. He cocked his gun at the man.

"Back the fuck off unless you're the captain" he shot a sarcastic smile with a cocked eyebrow. The man huffed at the gun and began walking away. "Wait," David said after him. The man stopped and turned. "That's a mighty fine topper you've got. How much… Continue

A Letter from the Graf to a friend on Mars

Burg Hohenfalkenhorst

Ruritanien

December 1st, 1882

My dear Dr. Maßenbach,

I was quite fascinated by your letter and the enclosures and am sure they will be of great use in my preparations to visit Mars. Her Majesty has expressed a great interest in my visiting the Tossian Academy and in particular, seeing Mme. Kovalevskaya. She hopes that anything I discover there might be of significant help to Prof. Graf Zerneck’s various…

Disturbing revelations

Wilhelm smiled as he waved his visitor in. Though he could not see the man's face he felt no concern about being attacked. This man's reputation was well founded for being as trustworthy as he was reliable.

Wil sat at his table as his guest did. "Mr. Sallidar, a true pleasure to see you again. You have information for me concerning the Grand Republic's interest in my work?"

The man removed his top hat, revealing his gray dusted hair. The mask over his face, on the other hand,…

A Gilded Cage: The Perfect Disguise

Phillip and Brielle met Griffin out by the stables. They nervously hovered, waiting for their friend to appear while trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. Brielle fed her favorite pony, Midnight, sugar cubes, giggling as he slobbered all over her hand. Phillip shook his head.

“Disgusting animals, sometimes. You do know you can just let Griffin take care of that…” His lip curled a little as she wiped her tiny hand against her dress.

            “Well where would…

The Political Factions of the Western Hemisphere

Fear.

Felix sat on the railing at the rear of the ship. Looking down at the half empty bottle of bourbon in his hands he lat out a prolonged sigh. "Where did you get that Felix," Valerius's voice echoed from behind him.

"What do you want now, its bad enough I'm imprisoned on this ship."

"Felix can you try to get along with me for once?"

"Can you answer some things for me first?"

"Maybe."

"How do you know so much?" Gritting his teeth and clenching the…

More from Death's Keeper...

Oh...someone is listening to the droning of my voice...nice. I'm Sgt. Ian MacBrooke by the way. The bulk of the pertinent info you've already seen, at least from my stand point and should you continue to hang about and listen to an old codger throw his opinions and tales about, you'll see the rest.

My time being well spent in Afrikka, I occasionally had the R&R a natural hunter needs to unwind. The natives and their objections not withstanding, I bagged quite a few of the…

A meeting of the minds

Wilhelm sighed as he moved a the knight into position on the chess board. He knew his gambit would not gain him more than three more moves but it was still better than his second opponent. It was only two more moves until he was in checkmate. The game between the opponents was still undecided.

Times like this reminded him that, in nearly every field, the two men opposite him were his superior. Their minds moved in ways that could not fathom, even with nearly three decades of life…

Death's Keeper, Sgt. Mac...

I suppose I could always start at the beginning, but nearly recent history is more palatable to the masses. Besides, a rather mediocre childhood and education all aside, life becomes more interesting after we start making our own choices. My first truly self-made decision to join the military and make something of myself started off much like anyone else's. I arrived at the Army recruiter's office, signed my 'Hancock' to paper, kissed the Queen's picture and took the shilling. I was…

Father and Son (Kolfife)

The lanky boy peered in on the women's side of the striped Bedouin tent as the circumference of a burning afternoon sun tapped the west mountains of the valley. Inside the shady tent, the smell of cumin and sweet Bedouin tea wafted about. The kid observed as his five mothers as they hurried about like cloaked phantoms, preparing for the guests to arrive. He watched as Basima chopped nana, her eyes, the only part of her that Kolfife had ever seen, concentrated on the slick kitchen knife. She… Continue

Concern

"I hate doing these political events," Felix said adjusting his suit coat.

"You know our orginization is on the line," Sarah teased him while putting in her earrings.

"I just hate being her dog," adjusting his tie and cuff links.

"You never felt that way about Cynthia."

"Cynthia is different though," choking a little bit.

"Not really, both captains and command a certain amount of authority."

"Well one of the biggest differences is I'm…

Sunrise over Saudi Arabia

It was four am when I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. my hammoc rocked back and forth as I pressed my feet against the rough wood of my room, glowing golden light from lantern on my desk and a pulsing green light as my belt hit full charge. I sighed and undid my hair from it's loose plat before replatting it and twisting it into a bun. I pinned it up and pulled on some brown trousers and my boots before changing my shirt. At 4:15, the ship's silence was disturbed by the sound of music… Continue

I Just Wanted to See the Window Shatter

Our laughter echoed off the cobblestone and sifted itself through the foggy midnight air of London slums. The usual distant yells of domestic violence and popping gunfire of criminal activity was drowned out by the sound of quickly paced heart beats as we ran, my nose numbed by cold rain and lightly sprinkled drops running on strands of my hair, some of these strandsclinging to my neck. Leander stopped short and pulled me into him to stop me as well.

"No, come on!" I laughed, "my…
